RECENT COMMUNITY NEWS AT YLS!
In January 2009 Yukon Learn will be offering courses in Dawson City to the Chief and Council of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Government. We are looking forward to taking Chief and Council and also the youth council through workshops in Roberts Rules and parliamentary procedure.
Yukon Learn will also be pleased to offer an Intro to Computers course in Haines Junction from February 16-20, 2009.
Our current Community Coordinator -- Megan Chesney has decided to resign from full-time employment with Yukon Learn and take on a volunteer role with the Yukon Learn Society. She wishes the staff and clients of Yukon Learn nothing but the best; yet she looks forward to a new role with Yukon College with the School of Access.
FUNDAMENTALS
| Tutor Training | Trained on learner-centered techniques (learner-based and learner-paced), to promote creative thinking when tutoring; acceptance of two-way learning (tutor-learner and learner-tutor). |
Basic Literacy Training |
Geared towards basic training on all essential skills. Designed for learners who must learn again to read, write and use basic math skills. Tutors are recruited for one-on-one training. |
COMPUTER COURSES
Introduction to Computers
(12 hrs over 4 days) |
Components of a computer and the windows environment are covered in this user friendly course. Includes time spent on terminology, technology, computer maintenance, typing, and the use of the Internet. A quick Introduction to office software programs are also included. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint. |
Introduction to Internet & Email
(12 hrs over 4 days) |
Begin to understand how to search for information on the Internet and use different search engines. Discussion of using information on the world wide web and the quality of information. Learn the differences of webmail based email programs (ISP and Internet) and MS Outlook. You will have the opportunity to set up an email account using free web-based webmail where you can compose messages and manage your correspondence. |
MS Word Beginner 2003 & 2007
(12 hrs over 4 days) |
This is an introductory class to learn how to word process using Microsoft Word. You will learn the different uses of a Word document, basic formatting, selected template use (resumes), spacing, paragraph layout. |
MS Excel Beginner – 2003 and 2007 (12 hrs over 4 days) |
Navigating the workbook; selecting cells and moving cells; calculations, functions and formulas; function arguments and specifying conditions; formatting, autocorrect and auto fill; using drawing tools and inserting graphics. ** Advanced courses can be offered upon special request. |
MS PowerPoint: Introductory – 2003 & 2007
(12 hrs over 4 days) |
Opening a presentation and changing views; using grids & guides; entering text and using Format Painter; formatting bullets & aligning text; using templates & slide layout; adding headers & footers & adding speaker notes; inserting shapes & adding text; formatting picture files; adding an object. |
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND OPTIONAL COURSES
Decision Making Techniques |
Learn techniques to help you with large and small decisions. These include prioritizing, cultural aspects, cross- cultural workplaces and assessing personal-weighted value. |
Conflict Resolution |
Learn how to resolve conflict in an office. Skills are developed to handle single and multi faceted conflicts as well as self care. |
Job Survival Skills |
Exploration of skills that are required in today’s job market: computer use, multi-tasking, document composition/writing, productivity. Time can be spent discussing different fields of work. |
Time Management Skills |
Evaluating and decision making skills are focused upon to help learners develop a system for managing time. Cultural aspects of time management are also discussed. |
Self Government |
Including a glossary of terms. Chiefs, Councils and their management teams are invited to participate. |
First Language – Mother Tongue Assisting First Nations to develop language programs |

Mavis Beacon |
This course assists learners to develop their computer typing. You will be brought through various levels and exercises of the Mavis Beacon e-learning computer software. |
