Frequently Asked Questions
What is Yukon Learn?
Yukon Learn is a non-profit organization that believes every individual has a right to learn the skills needed to participate fully in society. Yukon Learn has been providing literacy services in Yukon since 1983. Since our humble beginnings we have grown to an organization that makes over 100 tutor/learner matches per year and provides outreach programming at the Salvation Army, ARC and WCC.
How much time do I have to donate?
We ask that tutors meet up with their learners for 1 to 3 hours a week. Your learner and you will work out a tutoring schedule together, so you can tutor at whatever times are best for you. Tutoring can happen over your lunch hour, after work, or on the week-ends. Sessions can be an hour long or two hours, depending on your availability and the learner's needs.
What do I need to become a Yukon Learn Tutor?
Yukon Learn is looking for dedicated, enthusiastic people who have a genuine interest in helping other people improve their literacy skills and reach their learning goals. Our learners have reading, writing, math or computer needs. Some clients have very basic needs, while others are looking for more advanced help in college courses or for GED preparation. For this reason tutors with any educational background are welcomed!
How do I get matched up?
Tutors decide what type of learner they would like to work with. After that we try to match people according to common interests and hobbies. We also look at the type of help learners need and who is best able to help them reach their goals.
What happens once I get matched up?
After we make a tutor/learner match, we arrange a first meeting. This meeting is an opportunity to connect with your learner and assess your compatibility. At this point you can also clarify the goals of the learner and get a better idea of resources that you will need to achieve these goals. Finally, you will use this first meeting to decide on when and where you will meet for further tutoring. If you decide, you can also share phone numbers, so that in the future you will be able to contact one another.
Where can I tutor?
You can tutor at the most convenient place for you and your learner. The Learning Centre (downstairs of Yukon Learn) is available to you and your tutor at any time. Yukon Learn is open from 8:30 until 5pm . If you want to tutor outside of this time, you can get a key and security code for the building. Another popular place to tutor is Well Read Books or the Library. If the meeting rooms are empty, the librarians will open them up to you and your tutor. For something different you and your tutor may want to go the movies together and then write about it, or take a trip to the grocery store to learn some math!
What resources do I have available to me?
Yukon Learn has a great resource library and computer lab from which you can access information. We have books, tapes and videos that are separated into beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. There are also sections on math, reading, writing and GED preparation. Tutors will find information helpful to planning lessons and assessing their learners needs. Learners can be encouraged to borrow resources for at home study. Yukon Learn members are allowed to take out books for 1 month. If you are unable to find something in the library, come and visit Nora in her office. She may have an idea about where we could find useful information. You can also come in and use the computers to search for information on the internet.
What happens if it isn't working out with my learner?
If things are not working out with your tutor for ANY REASON, please call us! We can always look for a new learner or work together to remedy the situation. Remember·we want your time at Yukon Learn to be rewarding and enjoyable!
What happens if I can't continue tutoring?
If you are unable to continue for any reason, please let us know as soon as possible. This way we can find someone new for your learner. A detailed final progress report will help the next tutor by providing accurate information about what was being worked on and by outlining successful strategies for that particular learner.
