Salvation Army
Time: Any day of the week from 1:30-2:30 pm. These hours are variable. The only condition is that it must be during the day and 12-1 is very busy for lunch.
Help Required: At Salvation Army most of the literacy work will involve assisting clients in filling out forms, especially those related to social assistance (forms for housing, unemployment insurance, etc). Some forms you will be able to assist with, others you will need to direct the client to the appropriate agency. There may also be some assistance with resumes.
Skills Needed: The volunteer placed here will have to be caring and understanding. They must be willing to work with a variety of people, especially those who are in destitute circumstances. This position will probably involve more talking and interacting with clients than actual tutoring, so it must be filled with someone who considers themselves a ãpeople personä and is comfortable meeting new people.
The Salvation Army is a hub of activity especially between 11:30-1:00pm when they serve food. This is the main meeting place of the homeless, poor and destitute of Whitehorse . The strong correlation between poverty and literacy means that many of the people going to the Salvation Army are also suffering from very low levels of literacy. Many of the clients at Salvation Army need basic help with filling out forms, preparing a resume and some positive direction. This is Yukon Learn Society's first line of contact and our goal is to meet people at Salvation Army who will feel comfortable coming into Yukon Learn Society for further assistance. Tutors interested in concentrating on serious tutoring should NOT tutor here. You will have the occasional drop-in learner, but you may find yourself with little more to do then play cards with an occasional client. If you are a people person who enjoys talking and is comfortable working with an at-risk, diverse clientele this is a perfect place for you.
