What is the Education Centre?

The Education Centre is many things to many people. It is a classroom, a computer lab, a library, a coffee shop and a meeting place all rolled into one.

At its heart, the Education Centre provides a point of contact for those people wishing to improve/upgrade their literacy skills. The whole process for beginning the learning journey is simple:

  1. Contact our Learning Centre Coordinator, and arrange a time and place to meet.
  2. Together, decide on what you would like to learn, and how you would like to learn it!
  3. Be patient as the Coordinator matches you with a volunteer tutor!
  4. Once the match is made, meet your tutor and start learning.

Most tutor/learner pairs meet for 1-2 hours a week, at a time that best suits them.

Here is what you will find inside the the Learning Centre:

Library - in our Learning Centre library you can find a wide range of books for all ages on reading, writing, spelling, and grammar. Open to all members of the Yukon Learn Society.

Computer Lab - 10 computers with high speed internet access, a full range of software, and a laser printer and scanner as well! Open to all members of the Yukon Learn Society, free of charge.

Open Classroom - an area where people can learn at their own speed and in their own way. Available to all learners and tutors.

Kitchen - a small kitchen area with hot and cold drinks - you will always find the coffee hot and the kettle on!

The Education Centre is also used as a location for various literacy related workshops throughout the year, ranging from tutor training to computer classes. A complete list of upcoming classes and workshops can be found here.
